After a season of festivities spent hopefully as far away from the office or home office as possible, the new year is a time for fresh starts, and if you are returning to the office after a period of time spent away, there should be an emphasis on the word ‘fresh’.
If you have been away for a while, before you start working again is the best time to have a deep clean, clear out, sort and declutter of your desk, and here are some top tips for how to effectively do this.
Start With Decluttering
As tempting as it can be to get out the disinfectant, the first step to a clean office is getting rid of the clutter. Start at one corner of your workspace and move around clockwise, assessing everything and sorting it into three piles.
Put anything your want to keep into one box, anything you want to take home into a second box and bin anything else that is not relevant, out of date or disgusting in a third box or straight into a bin bag.
Take-home items include toiletries you store at the officer, spare pairs of clothes and shoes, whilst items you want to keep are inspirational pictures, knick-knacks, mascots and family photos.
When in doubt, follow the KonMari principle; if it sparks joy, keep it. If not, get rid of it.
Dust And Vacuum
The next step is to take out that layer of dust that has collected on the office over the time since you last used it. An electrostatic duster is your best option, but a feather duster or microfibre cloth will work as well in a pinch.
After the dust has been cleared from surfaces, get out the hoover and vacuum in drawers if you have a hose attachment and over upholstery and cubicle walls, before finally vacuuming the floor.
Clean And Disinfect
Finally, use disinfectant wipes (or a microfibre cloth with a light addition of rubbing alcohol) and go over your work surfaces, as well as unplug and wipe down the mouse, mousepads, keyboard, headsets, desk phone and remote controls.
Finally, clean out your coffee cups, wash your dishes and bin any food in the communal fridge.
